Mayer in 1917 for Bethelem Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Bethelem Steel. Bethelem Steel was a Pennsylvania firm which bought the shipyard from US Shipbuilding Company as part of Charles M. Schwab's (no relation to Charles R.) effort to monopolize shipbuilding in USA.
