San Francisco's historic Italian neighborhood and Beatnik haunt this was an actual beach until late in the 19th century.

In the 20th century it was home to Joe DiMaggio (and briefly his wife, Marilyn Monroe), the city's first lesbian club, Mona's 440, and America's first topless bar.
