Moulin Rouge

Financial District

Admire the bas-relief of the dancers, the only reminder of Barbary Coast's rowdiest nightclub, the Moulin Rouge. Alas, the original, far more explicit decorations by Arthur Putnam are now gone.

In the basement of this building one can still find an old secret tunnel used in Barbary Coast days to assist employees and customers who, for whatever reason, did not wish to meet the local police.1In my experience San Francisco police force is made up of friendly and helpful people, but the numerous tunnels and steel doors all over the city remind us that it was not always so
