Armistead Maupin lived in the ground floor apartment while writing Tales of the City, and before that Eleanor Roosevelt would drop by whenever she was in San Francisco to visit her friend, the dancer Mayris "Tiny" Martin. Look across the street at the Andrews House, 31 Alta St. It was built by Captain Andrews in the Greek Revival style in 1852 and is one of the oldest surviving houses in San Francisco. Note the characteristic balconied facade.
