Banker's Heart

Financial District

555 California St. used to be the headquarters of Bank of America, and for about three years (1969-1972) it was the tallest building in the West (Transamerica Pyramid was constructed in 1972 and is just a few feet taller).

The 200 or so tons of black granite from Sweden in front of is "Transcendence" by Masayuki Nagare, but most people call it The Banker's Heart, despite the fact that the Bank of America used to be the Bank of Italy, founded by A. P. Giannini, a man whose entire career contradicted the stereotype of a stony-hearted banker.
